Farmer's Market

posted on: 10.06.2014

Dear Farmer's Market of Santa Barbara,

My oh my did you prove me wrong. For years I secretly questioned the significance of you and your cousins across this fine state of California. I often asked, "What's so special about produce sold under a tent on stinky asphalt versus the same product found in a clean and air conditioned grocery store?" Logically, the later seemed more appealing. Plus, I was never that person who ate "organic". That was for vegans and wealthy pilates practicing moms. There's nothing wrong with either might I add, in fact I secretly wish I was both yet that's neither here nor there. The truth is yes, those people do shop on your streets, but so does everyone else in Santa Barbara apparently because you are AMAZING. My most sincere apologies for my ignorant prejudice and unwarranted judgement. You are quite plainly my favorite Saturday activity. Your fruits and veggies DO taste better than those of the unnamed mega-markets, and I never realized how happy a $5 bouquet could make me! Until you obviously.

So thank you FMSB, for being awesome, and good, and for introducing Erik and I to the best lemonade we have ever experienced.

With all my love and admiration,

Michaela

  4. There's a farmer's market in my city that I've never been to, having the same sort of thought as you- can it REALLY be that much better than grocery store produce?! Sounds like I need to give it a shot, though. :)

  7. Love this post!! I always find it tricky to get my self to the farmers market, it just seems like it will be quicker and easy to go the grocery store. But then when I do kick my self in the but and get there on Saturday mornings, I am so happy that I made the trip. Always an instant mood booster, especially because of the fresh and well priced flowers!
Those sunflowers you found are beautiful!

  12. Yay for loving Farmers' Markets now! I frequent the Farmers' Markets a lot here in Hawai'i because produce is cheaper that way. Due to import costs and such, produce are so expensive at the grocery stores!

  16. Living in New York, it's all about convenience. This means I go to the closest bodega or stand that has veggies or fruits. After reading your post and seeing the vibrancy of the fresh produce, you've inspired me to pay a visit to the farmers market. Thanks for sharing!
